Hi, I am looking for a dog that could be trained to go to nursing homes and/or hospitals. What type of dog would be best for this? I dont have a big yard but I could take it on long walks, it would also have to be good with children. And since I dont have a very big yard I dont think a big dog would be best. Does any dog come to mind? Please help?

border collie would be the best… and they are fun because they are toy dogs… teaching them to jump and catch balls or frisbees will be lots of fun for people in hospitals/nursing homes. mine brings the ball back and sets it right in my lap. she loves to please people.

I have seen dogs of almost every breed and some cross breed trained to visit nursing homes, hospitals etc. It’s all in the training and there is quite a bit of it. And, as long as your dedicated to exercising your dog regularly, most any breed would be good for you. As you may know, they have even trained miniature horses, pot belly pigs and other types of animals as therapy dogs. So, take you pick.

I watch the television station called Animal Planet. They have a show that gives you the best and worse of dog breeds. You can also look up dog shows on your enter net. Most breed organizations will tell you the strengths and weaknesses of their breed. I saw a lot of good qualities in the whippet, and some terriers. The whippet has to be able to run outside and let off some steem. But at home they are laid back.
You might check with your animal shelter. I know that labs have worked out as therapy dogs, and believe it or not the big boxers have to. Dogs have their own personalitities a side from it’s breeding just like we do. Your local vet may have just what you need.

Oh please don’t get a Border Collie as someone suggested. Border Collies were bred to work livestock. I have four Border Collies, but only one is okay as a therapy dog. Just about any well trained dog is great as a therapy dog. Contact your local kennel club and they can most likely put you in touch with their dog therapy group.

They are great with children, calm, friendly and trainable dogs.
