I have a 3 month old pit bull terrier mix puppy. We are working on training him and have noticed that several of the “experts” from our training manual and videos sometimes contradict each other. I was wondering if anyone could tell me of some resources that you have used that have worked for you, so that I can look into them? So far, I have come across Caesar Milan ,Barbara Wodehouse(sorry about the spelling) , Kevin-somebody , and a couple of others. Thanks in advance

Answer by ?Pit Bull?
Oh yes, I know of LOTS of great books.

For one, “Pit Bulls for Dummies” is a great book.

There is a book at Pet Smart JUST for Pit Bull training, and it comes with a Training DVD.

I also have “Idiots guide to Positive Dog Training”

There are many online resources as well.

Does anyone know if there are special tips for crate training a puppy while already having an adult obedient dog that is not kept in a crate any longer? I’m about to get a puppy who I plan on crate training, but I already have an extremely obedient dog who is left free rein of the house at all times. Will this make things harder?

I only got my first two dogs 6 months ago and have really enjoyed transforming them into generally good citizens and am even interested in perhaps making it a career. How do I go about becoming a professional dog trainer? And maybe even walking dogs?
For clarification, I want to train for good behavior and solve behavioral issues

Best answer:

Answer by xallyxx16
There are several courses you can do to become a trainer. Just be wary that there are already many out there in the world! To walk dogs, however, all you need to do is advertise on the streets (like flyer’s and things) to say that you are a keen dog walker, and will walk dogs for a minimum charge of (depending on the size of the dog)

Answer by paddingzero
I really recommend the Dog Training Guide. It’s awsome….and free. They deliver each chapter over 12 weeks (12 chapters in total) and after the 12 weeks they give you advice and tips still. I definatly recommend it, all you do is give them your name and email address. They cover a lot of ground. Check source for link

Question by Sam R: How do you become certified to be a service dog or certified as a service dog in training?
I live in georgia can some one see what is required for a dog to be certified As a service dog or one in trainging and if in georgia service dogs in training have full access

Best answer:

Answer by Borders Rock
You first need to understand that if your dog is to become a service dog, he/she will become someone else’s dog, not yours. Is that what you want?
Service dogs are generally tested by the organization in charge of whichever group you choose…the visually impaired, the hearing impaired, the mobility impaired, etc. You need to contact them.
The organizing body will test the dog for proper temperament and trainability. If the tests are passed, the dog goes into training – possibly with you but unless you have experience, not likely. Once the dog passes the required tests and probationary period, it will be placed in a home where it is needed. So…you lose your pet. It is a noble cause and if you wish to pursue it, I do wish you the best of luck. Just know that he/she will no longer be yours.
I opted to have one of my dogs tested as a Therapy Dog (he passed with flying colors) and we now (together) visit nursing homes and hospitals to bring cheer to the sick and/or elderly. I could never give up my dog.

therapy dogs are NOT allowed in stores and restraunts either.. they are only allowed in places like hospitals and nursing homes.

Any websites or lists off the top of your head are appreciated, and if you have any suggestions to anything else I should put in it besides how to train/correct problems I’d love to hear them thanks!

I recommend either going to the bookstore and buying a few books to go off of, visit your local library, or using google, and reading sources.
