Question by K.A.H.: What dog training books, videos, etc do you recommend?
I have a 3 month old pit bull terrier mix puppy. We are working on training him and have noticed that several of the “experts” from our training manual and videos sometimes contradict each other. I was wondering if anyone could tell me of some resources that you have used that have worked for you, so that I can look into them? So far, I have come across Caesar Milan ,Barbara Wodehouse(sorry about the spelling) , Kevin-somebody , and a couple of others. Thanks in advance

Answer by ?Pit Bull?
Oh yes, I know of LOTS of great books.
For one, “Pit Bulls for Dummies” is a great book.
There is a book at Pet Smart JUST for Pit Bull training, and it comes with a Training DVD.
I also have “Idiots guide to Positive Dog Training”
There are many online resources as well.
Email me if you need anything else!

Question by kalamibe: What are some good dog training books or DVD?
I currently have my 5 month old in puppy class. I was going to go through all 4 classes at Petsmart, but now I’m thinking I could save about 0.00 and teach my dog the same things (and probably more), if I invest in a good book or DVD. Any suggestions? I’d prefer a DVD, but books are fine too. That way I can also apply the training to our other two dogs at the same time.
I do have a clicker… I was very impressed with how easy and quickly she responded to it. I take my dogs to the dog park so they do a lot of socializing there. I’m just not very impressed with the training I’m getting. Asking questions is hard, because I think the trainer is more distracted than the dogs.

The monks of New Skete in upstate New York are the best. Look for them on line and at Amazon.com

Question by toricrawford: What are some of the most effective dog training books to used? Which ones are the best?
I’m trying to buy a good dog training book so I can train my dog at home. There are so many I don’t know which ones would be the best to get. So if you’ve ever used a dog training book, let me know what you thought about it.

Two MUST read books for you are Dog Problem: Gentle and modern solutions by David Weston and The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell. I once asked this question on a forum and got some good answers here is the link if you want to check it out: http://www.dogforums.com/2-general-dog-forum/35912-need-your-guy-s.html
ETA: I would stay away from the Koehler Training book, I just read it and its appauling. In general stay away from books that focus on negative training.
