Question by TarrahP: How does one go about starting a dog training/boarding/grooming business? What would the first 3 steps be?
I don’t know anything about business plans and how to go about it – we don’t have a lot of “start up” money to hire other people to do stuff for us. I just want to start small and then go from there. We already board/train some dogs – worried about liability and how to go about insuring that there isn’t an incident that would cause us to lose our house! These are just some of the issues.

It’s all research. Contacting companies that already are in this business in parts of the same state that you live would be a good start. Probably start with 3-4 companies. You aren’t infringing on their customer base, and talking shop… but first you want to know:

1) Who is your local competition?

2) How many people in your area have pets that would be within a reasonable distance from you?

3) What facilities will you need?
____

after that, contact those companies I spoke of earlier and ask:

a) What prices are they charging for the services you want to offer?

b) Ask your questions regarding insurance

c) How many customers do they handle per month?

These should give you a start, to help you determine what your next steps should be. Good luck.

Question by AnnaB: Dog Training Session With Kids – Would you enroll your kids in training for them and your family dog?
I am thinking about holding training for kids and their family dogs, teaching the children how to train and work with their dog. We would cover things like basic commands such as sit, and fun tricks and games too. Is this something you would enroll you child in?

If so, how long should each class be?
How many weeks should the classes run?
How much should the classes cost?
What would be your concerns?
Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

Major concern…Do you know what you are doing? If you do then you do not need to ask those other questions. Send me e-mail as to your qualifications and I will answer those other questions for you

Question by libertydogtraining: What kind of info would you like to see on a dog training site?
I just wanted to know what kind of info ya’ll would be interested in seeing on a dog training website.

I am going to be updating my webpage, with info about items that are toxic to dogs, children with dogs, and what really happens when a pet is given up by it’s owner or turned loose.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I would like to see some GOOD.. GOOD sound advice on various things about training dogs.. i.e. how to keep dogs from “riding” someone’s leg; control barking; urininating on the rug; how to obey the master; etc.. Yes. there are many sites but none that really give sound specifics…. based on knowledge and experience
